How boot windows xp without bootable/recovery cd

Asked by rajusenthi

I am using dual booting as windows xp pro and ubuntu 8.10.While working with wine application ubuntu hanged.I don't know how to recover from system hanging.Hence I switch off the power supply from ups. This may occur two or more times contineously. Then when ever I choose windows xp to boot,it did not load.Error message is ''unmountable - boot - volume''.But ubuntu works well as earlier. I don't have windows bootable cd.How can I boot windows xp without bootable/recovery cd?

When you boot up you get a menu with lots of Ubuntu choices? Next time choose the one that has "Recovery Mode" at the end of the line. Most of these things (except "Fix x-server") are worth doing about once a month anyway. Hopefully there's an option to "Check disk for errors, fsck". If there isn't then choose the option to "Continue normal boot into Ubuntu" and go up to the top tasbar. Click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

and into the terminal/command window/console type

fsck --help

the "--help" tag usually gives us intructions, a help guide, on how to use the command. It should allow you to do the fsck even if the drive is flagged as being clean. It'd be good if it fixed errors but gave you a prompt. And it would also be good if it gave "verbose" output, i think. I hardly ever understand all the things different applications say in verbose mode but it's good watching lots of "Ok"s rushing by and worth noting some things if it says "Fail" or anything.

Sorry i can't really help much
Good luck and regards from

Ooops, sorry about that. A few questions then ...

Did the "Recovery Mode" do an fsck check of your Xp 'drive'

When you system 'hangs' are you still able to move your mouse around? Can you press the Alt key and while pressing it try the Tab key, does that have an effect? If your mouse is a usb mouse can you try it in a different Usb socket? Does that make it work again?

When your system 'hangs' please try letting it complete whatever it's trying to do. I usually go off to the loo or make a cup of tea or something. Avoid turning the power off at the ups, trying the computers own on/off switch. The big main one should power down the machine if you hold it in for 15 seconds, sometimes a bit longer. This way allows the computer to do a basic power-down procedure so that things stop safely.

Please let me know about some of the questions i asked and i'll try to help you from there.
Good luck and regards from

Have you reinstalled Windows or are you just about to start on that. I'd hoped we could avoid that and could just fix the problems from inside Ubuntu. Sorry if i have got there too late :(
