BootMgr - NON VISTA Problem!

Asked by yuppy

Hi Guys,

I hope you can help, I've spent 2 days reading similar posts but nothing seems to work.

I have installed Ubuntu onto an external hard drive (using my Vista machine). I can boot up Ubuntu from my Vista machine with no problems.

However I now want to use this Ubuntu drive in my new (to me) NetBook. (Toshiba, Portege, M300). However when I install my Ubuntu HD into this machine I get the infamous error "bootmgr is missing". I REALLY hate this error by now.

So I've done my research and ALL of them suggest that I should use my Vista recovery DVD to fix this problem. Why the hell do I need to use a Vista CD when this is a pure Ubuntu install?

Can anyone give me any ideas? Do Toshiba laptops require Bootmgr (i.e a windows installation?)

PLEASE PLEASE help,
Marc

P.S Thanks in advance....

lol, off the top of my head i can think of 3 different linux solutions that avoid needing M$ at all. My first choice would be to hunt around the bios to change the boot order so that "External or Usb" was top of the list. I have a feeling you have already tried that tho?

My second favourite would be to properly install a linux on the netbook as a dual-boot (no point losing an ostensibly legitimate working Windows). The menu.lst is unlikely to need modifying but is fairly easy if required.

My least favourite would be to rewrite the Mbr of the netbook's hard-drive so that it needed the external drive in order to bootup.

As i think about it i can think of lots of other options but it's occurred to me that you might have installed Ubuntu inside Windows with the Wubi? Does the vista machine still boot up and offers the Ubutnu option but without being able to boot into Ubuntu?

To put it another way did you boot off the Cd and follow this type of install?

Either way there are lots of linux answers. Please let us know
Good luck and regards from
