can't remove Grub from my drive

Asked by dpayment

This morning I tried to install Ubuntu 8.10 to a USB drive connected to my laptop. That appears to have failed, but in addition, my Windows XP drive now will not boot. I see the Grub Loader message, then it errors out with an Error 21.

I've tried the Grub Removal option "boot from Windows XP cd, hit R and then type fixmbr", but when I hit the R key, the Windows installer comes back saying that there are no drives on my system. My laptop has 2 fixed disks, and the Windows Install doesn't appear to see either of them.

Hope someone out there can help.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

I don't know if it will help but you might like to try the SuperGrubDisk (www.supergrubdisk.org) which has an array of tools all relating to grub.

your laptop HD controller is not bundeld into the standard xp disc.

1) go to your lptp mfg.s websited and download the xp driver for ,i don't know, storage driver; or something like that.
2) run the dloaded executable and remember where it extracts the files to.
3) go into that folder and there should be atleast one folder inside that and you should see somthing like either an executable that will format a floppy for you, or a list of files mostly .dll's and one *.oem file.
4) once the fdd is made for your hd controller or raid setup (whichever you have) boot from XP CD - hit F6 (to install additional drivers) - hit s - pick your drivers from the list - hit enter - then hit R - select 1 - hit enter - either enter password or if blank hit enter
5) fixmbr
  then
6) fixboot

then restart your computer.

[exact steps are difficult at this point without knowing lptp specs.]
[you will need a usb fdd for this]
