To get perfect step by step instructions, It would be helpful to have some more information. Please boot the LiveCD and open a terminal from Applications-> Accessories-> Terminal and type these commands.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -lu

Copy and paste the output of this command. Then enter grubs CLI

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo grub

grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
grub> find /boot/grub/fat_stage1_5
grub> find /boot/grub/menu.lst

Copy and past the output of these commands as well.

Thank you.

You may find it easier to install GRUB using the Super Grub Disk, found at http://www.supergrubdisk.org/. The instructions for restoring GRUB to your MBR can be found here: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/wiki/Howto_Fix_Grub

You have installed Ubuntu on a different partition than primary disk (different from /dev/sda or /dev/hda).
So when the system ask you where write grub you have not set the right disk...
Try to install Grub on right disk boot sector ( might be /dev/sda or /dev/hda )...

Hope this helps
