dual boot with vista

i got vista installed on (C) drive and i want to install ubuntu 8.04 beside vista on (D) drive , is there any problem could happer .

I'm fraid of losing vista from the boot, so cold it be possiable to have a dual boot with vista witout any problem .

GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) is responsible to provide easy dual boot between Vista and Ubuntu, and it gets automatically installed during Ubuntu's installation.

Just a note:

The D: drive is the one for CDs. You need to install Ubuntu in the C: drive along Vista, as this is the best and easiest way.

Also, in order to keep Vista, you will be required to install Ubuntu in a new partition of your C: drive, which you can effortlessly create following the onscreen instructions of the Ubuntu installer. If you are inexperienced on this, however, I would seriously recommend that you make a backup of all important documents, to be insured against any mistake you could incur in- although I am sure that will not happen. When you finish the installation, Vista and Ubuntu will be there.

I have vista on C: drive & i want to install ubuntu without using Wubi on D: drive & i want to know if vista will be able to boot after installing ubuntu.
And i don't have free space on C: drive to install ubuntu on it with vista

Setting up a dual boot with Vista can be done quite easily. You can do this without losing your ability to boot Vista.

Please tell... if you have two separated hard drives or just one hard drive with 2 partitions.

You should be able to install Ubuntu. When it installs grub to MBR of your HDD it will overwrite Vistas bootloader. This is normal and you should not get worried. Grub will automatically detect your Vista installation and put an entry in your grub menu. If for any reason you have problems, you can easily restore Vistas bootloader to the MBR with you Vista CD.

The worst possible thing that you could do is make a mistake will the installer and tell it to use your entire disk for the Ubuntu install. This would overwrite you entire vista installation and you would lose everything. As long as you don´t do this, any sort of bootloader problems are fairly easy to recover from.

To restore Vistas bootload you can just boot to the Vista CD and select the command prompt.

Simply type in

bootrec /fixmbr

That should do it :)

Since grub will automatically detect you Vista installation, you will probably only have to use this command if/when you ever decide to uninstalling ubuntu.
