Run Windows Install CD → go to "recovery console" (or so) and use "fixmbr" command to install windows loader to MBR...

        COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:

That fixmbr stuff should work, but if it doesn't, there's probably no other way than to reinstall Windows.

had the same/similar problem .. here is what fixed my XP machine:

I deleted all UBUNTU partitions and repartitioned as desired and formatted. On booting, I had an option to boot Ubuntu or XP but had no Ubuntu to boot:

Fixes to the boot screen problem!!!!!!:

1. Boot from XP CD and into console mode. It defaults to C:windows.

2.Change to root dir C:

3. Execute 3 separate commands (enter after each):
fixmbr
fixboot
bootcfg /rebuild and I got result [1] below where I answered YES then nothing for "Load Identifier" then nothing for Enter Operating System Load Options: though I probably should have provided "/fastdetect" SEE BELOW:

"bootcfg /rebuild command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP installations, and then displays the results. You can add the detected Windows installations.

You may receive a message that is similar to the following message:
Total Identified Windows Installs: 2

[1] C:Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu)
Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect)

THIS DID NOT COME UP:
[2] D:Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu)
Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect)

(enter bootcfg only for all available bootcfg commands).

Rebooted computer and NO boot screen!!!

Can you help with this problem?
