help with a problem

As my user name implies I'm 66 and a total 'newbie' to Linux. In trying to install a copy of Ubuntu 8.04 on my system I screwed up, all I get is a error message saying 'GRUB loading Stage 1.5 - GRUB
loading---please wait Error 21'. Now computer will not do anything; the only way I can access any function is by booting from the CD. I screwed up twice because I install Ubuntu on a already partitioned (4 volumes) external HDD with two volumes in use. I assigned the installation to a 30gig
section and all of you know what happened next.
