Grub Error 22

Asked by Jono00

Hello everyone.
I have installed Linux Ubuntu a few minutes ago. I also have Windows XP SP3. Linux and Windows are installed in DIFFERENT hard drives.
(Windows on C:\ and Linux on D:\ for example)
The install went on okay, but after the restart, the PC tried to lunch linux but then it showed a Grub Error 22.
I am now writing through Linux using the Live CD.
What is the problem? how can I fix it?
Please help, its important.

Thanks in advance!

Which drive is Grub installed to, the master or the slave? Have you tried disconnecting the Ubuntu HDD and then booting the system into Windows? Provide us with more information, steps that could be taken to recreate the problem.

According to Ubuntu what are the locations of your partitions?

Do they correspond with the data located in /boot/grub/menu.list ?

@Steven Rose
How do I check the two?
What should I do if the correspond or not?

Thanks again!

Thanks Bhavani Shankar.
But there is a step there which i dont really understand:
1. Reboot with Alternative CD
What "Alternative CD"? Does this mean the Live CD or some other CD that I need to download?

Thanks again.

Hello again:

alternate CD is a CD with a text based installer and used in case of any problems

I suggest you check out the download site http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and tick in the download alternate CD check box

Next,Choose a location near you and download the ISO. Then follow the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto (Burn your cd at a lower speed say at 4x and check your MD5 sums)

Bit info about MD5 sums:
With an md5 sum you can compare the contents of files. If your .iso file is defect (this can happen when you download it), it's md5sum would be different than that one on the Ubuntu server.

To calculate the md5sum of your image file, you can use a command line tool like http://www.md5summer.org/download.html for Windows (on Ubuntu it's the 'md5sum' command). Then compare the calculated value with the ones in this list http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/MD5SUMS.
So if you have the ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso, the calculated value should be 166991d61e7c79a452b604f0d25d07f9

If the file has a different md5sum than expected, I would recommend to download that iso again.
