when i select ubuntu in GRUB, It says "cant mount partition"

AOA,
I had installed XP and later Ubuntu 7.10.
later I had to reinstall XP media addition. resultantly, GRUB disappered.
I checked from this support section and reloaded GRUB by booting in Live CD and in terminal widow setting up GRUB.
now grub shows up but when I select ubuntu in GRUB, It says "cant mount partition".
what to do? other than fresh installation of ubuntu

When you boot the Live CD, can you post the output of:-
sudo fdisk -l
and also:-
cat /path/to/ubuntu-root/boot/grub/menu.lst
