Error 17 after install Hardy on gigabyte MA78GM

Asked by mn

Install Ubuntu 8.04 on single Hard Drive SATA with WinXP already on. SATA setup as AHCI on bios. Tried with 2 hard drives first, taken additional one out (there was no RAID thou). Setting ubuntu up as only OS using full HD capacity (238 GB), installs ok. If I partition HD with 2 main partitions, with WinXP on first one-78.13 GB-, then install ubuntu using live CD, using manual partitioning asigning separate partitions on gparted for /home, / and swap, installation completes fine, restart and get grub error 17. Reinstalled ubuntu several times, changing the placement of grub on each different partition (/,home), still the same error 17. Used SuperGrubDisk but it has been unable to fix it.

It seems that grub cannot find the partitions that /boot/grub/menu.lst tells it to mount before loading initramfs and the kernel...

We'll need your grub menu and your fdisk list. Try booting using a livecd, then mount the linux (/) partition. Find the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and attach it here. Also, in a terminal, type 'sudo fdisk -l > fdisk.log' and attach the fdisk.log file here...

error 17 is not a bug, converting to question for more exposure to the LP answers teams.

What a shame in a way. Problem can't be replicated anymore. I've installed Hardy again, this time having taken the second HD out to stop grub from getting confused. Had to re-install Windows first, MBR wasn't right anymore. This time I installed / and /home the other way around i.e. partition with /home before /.
Thanks.
