Grub Removal

Asked by michaeldobbs

The problem I am having is similar to that discussed in "Restoring the MBR" but I need to double check something. I have Ubuntu installed on a second hard drive with Windows XP on the main HDD. The main HDD (200gig) is partitioned with the bulk of the drive for storage. Just recently the Ubuntu drive, which is an older HDD, has started to give problems and is not always being detected in the boot up and so the system hangs because the Grub is missing info. I want to remove the old drive and the Grub but I get the message that running fixmbr, from within the repair console, could mess up my partitions. Is there a possibility that it will mess up the partitions on the main HDD or is it just talking about the main HDD and the Ubuntu HDD? I really want to get rid of this before the old drive dies completely. I will be greatful for any help I can get.

Hello

remove the old drive first...

Boot from the windows XP CD, press the "R" key in the setup in order to start the restoration console. Once the restoration console starts Go to C:\ or the drive name where you have installed windows xp...

Enter the command: "fixmbr" (without the quotes) at the input prompt and confirm the next question with a "Y" (without the quotes).

Ex: C:\> fixmbr

will fix your mbr so as to start win xp directly..

and then reboot the system and you are done...

Hope it helps

Bhavani Shankar.
