I installed 7,04 onto a flast drive, get grub error booting to hard drive.

Asked by Spike

I installed Ubuntu 7.04 by booting to the cd. I installed it to a flash dirve. I reformatted the flash drive on anther computer.

Now, when I try to boot up the first computer I get a grub error. How do I get it to boot to xp. The grub would come up when I had the flash in and I could boot fine. Now I do not have the flash, how can I get the cpu to boot to xp?

Thanks in advance,
Dennis

I meant I had a choice to get to xp when I booted with the flash in. Now I can't.

The grub must initiate from the hard drive, then looks for the usb flash?

Hello dennis

Boot from the windows XP CD, press the "R" key in the setup in order to start the restoration console. press the drive letter of your xp installation (normally c:)

and when you get C: type fixmbr to fix the master boot record

Ex: C:\> fixmbr

fixes your master boot record..

Bhavani Shankar.

Bhavani,

Thank you so much.

I am a beginner and trying to get away from XP and Vista. I have had a cpu since the 8086 days.

I will read often and maybe I can help some one soon.
