Is menu.lst:crashdump=1 worth doing for AMD64?

Asked by Ralph Corderoy

On 7.10, grub's menu.lst contains "Setup crashdump menu entries" with crashdump defaulting to 0. Setting it to 1 and then update-grub results in extra menu items for each kernel with "(crashdump mode)" in the title and "crashkernel=64M@16M" being passed to the kernel. Is this functionality useful for AMD64? Where can I find more about it? Is it safe to try using it?

Ubuntu bug #157777 is on the kernel and affecting lots of AMD64 users but we're getting little feedback so I was hoping to gather more information about the frequent crashes that 7.10 has introduced over 7.04 on the same hardware.

Thanks.
