Grub 1.5 error 2 after installing 7.10

Asked by TSeroogy

Have Sony PCG-GRT25 laptop. Running Ubuntu/Linux only.

Have been using Ubuntu successfully for some time. I added the recommended updates. When shutting down, a network error occurred and prevented a complete shutdown. Restarted and received the "Grub 1.5 Error 2" problem.

Have read several solutions. Have tried to change DMA setting in bios, but it does not appear to be an option on this computer. Need help with following:

1. first and foremost - access and recover existing data from drive.
2. recover full operation of computer and system.

Thank you,

Can the bios see the disk at all (on the first screen if your bios looks as i suppose, a size besides primary master)? Can you see the disk while running some bootable cd ( like Ubuntu cd :) You should be also able to enable SMART in bios, so it would tell you if the disk is ok.

It may be that the drive is dead, in which case you would need professional help.

Thank you for the response.

The harddrive and the CD are not dead. The CD was readable and allowed me to rn Super Grub Disk. I ran Super Grub Disk and was able to view the partitions made during the original setup - this includes a regular partition and a cache partition.

Made an attempt to fix and boot using Super Grub Disk. Both procedures failed with a #15 error. It appears that some files or directories are missing, or have had their names changed during the updating.

I believe this to be possible as the computer did not restart correctly after performing the recommended updates; it did not complete the shutdown due to a "network failure" and a forced or hard shutdown and reboot were required.

Any suggestions on accessing and moving the data as is? Although I've installed quite a few programs, I'm perfectly willing to start all over once I've backed up some of my files.

Best regards,

I would use a bootable cd (again Ubuntu cd is fine) to transfer your files somewhere, copy them to a flash drive, to another hard drive, or if you can get network running off the cd send them to your mail account. You should see icons for all your partitions on the desktop (e.g.: hda1 or sdb5). Some settings (including mail storage) can be found within the /home directory in hidden folders (e.g.: .evolution).

If this is one of the grub files missing then you can fix that by reinstalling grub (http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html#Installing-GRUB-using-grub_002dinstall). If it is the kernel that got corrupted maybe you can fix it by replacing the files in the /boot folder on the hard drive with files from the kernel package (http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/base/linux-image-2.6.22-14-386; choose the proper one for your architecture).

Was able to boot from CD and transfer critical files. Thank you.

I need to do a little more work to find and confirm the exact problem. If I find that and the solution, I will repost to this thread.

Again, thanks.
