Ubuntu 6.10 Grub error 21 PLEASE HELP

Asked by Cupid.Stunt

Dear all:
My system includes two hdds: one master (for windows xp) and the other slave (for Linux-better say Ubuntu)
I don't always need to use linux. As a mater of fact i only use it 10 % of the time and the slave hdd produces a lot of white voice which i HATE. I tried to disconnect the slave drive but I kept getting the Grub error 21 on startup. so I have to have the slave harddrive in all the time to be able to use windows xp. Can anyone help me with this so I can run the master hdd alone again. thanks

Well, it seems that you've installed GRUB in MBR on master hdd. There is a way to make another way. You can try do following
1. install GRUB on the slave hdd (recovery mode of Ubuntu, starting from CD)
2. make fixmbr from recovery mode of XP (be very carefull, because you can lost all you data, I advise you get some additional support on this topic)
3. download bootpart tool (http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm)
4. Using bootpart, create an entry in XP multiboot menu for Linux - then you will be booting windows by default and linux only if you choose.

I think then you can disconnect slave hdd and connect it only when you want to use linux

Can you help with this problem?
