GRUB doesn't load on system startup

Asked by Sauce

I just finished installing Ubuntu using the text-based installer (live-cd one kept freezing just after the splash screen and welcome sound) and it asked me to install GRUB because it detected Windows XP on my system. I told it yes, It said it was all successful, and then restarted my computer.

Then during startup, It went straight into windows. The damn boot loader didn't even show up.

XP is installed on a 200GB SATA HDD, and Ubuntu is installed on a 40GB IDE HDD.

How can I fix this? :(

Is your IDE drive set as first boot priority in the BIOS? That might clear some things up.

No, the SATA 200GB drive is set to first priority.

Thanks for the fast reply :D

Ok, so now GRUB is loading fine and I can boot into both Win XP and Ubuntu, however after the Ubuntu logo and loading screen disappears, it freezes - usually when I can see the background colour of the desktop, but not the background image or any of the desktop itself.

What do I do? :(

I used to have that problem, but I solved it with a simple reinstallation. Maybe you could try that. If that fails, post another message here.

Nevermind, it is caused by installing the 32bit Ubuntu on a 64bit machine. I just had to specify the boot parameters "irqpoll pci=noacpi noapic nolapic acpi=off".

Now I can run Ubuntu fine! :D Thankyou for everything guys.
