after loading the GRUB and pressing ubuntu, the ubuntu sign will load but then the screen will go blank and i cant log in

Asked by alexzandria

Well, I have a Toshiba laptop. it's like 5 years old. I've been running Ubuntu successfully for the past 5 months atleast with no problems until now. My GRUB will load. I select Ubuntu and it goes to the little Ubuntu loading sign. After about 5 minutes(where it normally goes to my log-in screen) it just stays that brown colour. I went to the recovery option trying to figure out what was wrong. It say something about " ALERT! Dev/disk/uuid/(not sure what the numbers were here) does not exist."

I'm wondering what happened. Did I get a virus of some kind?

Assuming it is not a hardware problem, (after all, your hard disk is 5 years old), please advise what Ubuntu version you are using and if it is upgraded from older version. (I actually want to know what grub version you are using.)

Can you boot using older kernels? Can you also boot without the 'quiet' and 'splash' at the linux line?

Can you help with this problem?
