ubuntu instalation issue

i am currently running windows xp home edition with a compaq presario SR2170NX Desktop with an intel celeron d processor ATI RADEEON XPRESS GRAPGHICS 200
512mb ram.

today i tryied installing ubuntu from a live cd the computer boots up then the ubuntu screen come up then when i click install i get a message saying
kernal panic timer does not work then it just stays there

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you check the CD for defects?

i didnt download iso from internet i got the live cd

it doesnt let me check the cd for defects because it would not let me acces the menu the purple background screen comes up then it stays like that for a minute or something and then a black screen comes up with an error message it has some number at the front then it says kernal panic then it has more numbers then it says timer not working.

It will, when the stick man shows, press space. You can check it there.

If the CD is ok you can the try some boot options using the same screen as the CD test:
