Grass GIS crashes at startup

Asked by Chethan S.

Recently I installed GRASS GIS Version 6.4.0RC5+39438 from official ubuntu repository. I am very new to grass gis but based on intuition and online references I setup GIS Data directory in my home directory. I defined a new location using EPSG codes.

Now my problem is whenever I start grass by clicking 'Enter GRASS' a splash screen appears and immediately it goes off. I mean grass quits without any error or warning!

Please help me out of this!

What happens if you open a terminal and type grass? If an error occurs during booting most likely something will be displayed here.

Hurray! Now its alright!

I used to key in grass at Alt+F2 prompt. Then the grass startup screen used to appear. When I clicked on enter grass a splash screen and another window used to appear and grass used to crash.

Now when I typed grass in terminal I get it right. Now I notice that the another window which used to appear was grass output window.

Thanks a lot! Its alright now.
