Gramps only runs in terminal

Asked by normj

I downloaded an installed the latest GRAMPS to UBUNTU 10.10. Gramps runs but show Error 13- permission denied and I cannot load databases. The only way Gramps will operate properlly is in terminal. How can I change ownership from root to norm (my log in name)?

Did you install it using Ubuntu Software Center or from their download?

I downloaded Gramps from Sourceforge because they had the latest version. I tried the older Gramps, downloaded from Ubuntu Software Center with same results.

The files / directories that were missing after installation are; .gramps/keys.ini, .gramps/grampsdb. /usr/bin/env was empty.

In ubuntu 10.10 I tried this in Terminal:

  sudo apt-get install gramps python-gtkspell python-enchant ttf-freefont graphviz python-webkit

and GUI is working fine. Can you try it yourself?

Yes, the application runs now. Can you explain why these files were not installed with Gramps? One other request; can you supply me with list of files / directories in Home Directory associated with Gramps and what files / formats they contain?
Thank You
Norm

Apparently they are not necessary for the operation but just add extra functionality. You could contant the package maintainer of gramps (Ubuntu Developers <email address hidden> in this case) and advice them to add stricter dependencies on these packages.

I am not familiar with gramps myself but I have some experience in installation issues.
