Disk partitioning fails on Desktop 9.10 beta during install

Asked by tapsa62

Installing Desktop 9.10 Beta version goes nicely as long as it starts to perform the disk partitioning. I select "use whole disk" option with default values. It the starts the pertition showing 0% for few seconds, then fails to text mode console and shows some error message, which I have not been able to capture because it quickly starts the live boot and the message is gone. The Desktop 9.04 installs fine. My MB is Asus CUSL2 with a 30GB ATA disk (10 years old PC for just testing).

Hopefully this is fixed in the 9.10 GA version.

Hmm...could you provide some more info regarding your system's specs and such? It could be that the computer you're trying to use may be too old or too small regarding hardware for Ubuntu Karmic.

MB: Asus CUSL2
CPU: Intel PIII 800MHz (Coppermine)
RAM: 512MB
Disk1: 30GB PATA
Disk2: 120GB PATA

Because 9.04 installs and runs very nice on this HW, I do not believe that it would insufficient for 9.10.
But it is possible that the disk HW is not compatible anymore with the latest filesystem and grub.
During install I select the partitioning option: Erase and use the entire disk
Before the install starts, the summary of information is shown, see below.
I'm wondering if it is normal that install says SCSI when I have parallel ATA disks.

The partition tables of the following devices are changed:
  SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda)

The following partitions are going to be formatted:
  partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) as ext4
partition #5 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) as swap

The install process stays at 0% for maybe 30 seconds, then it exits from graphical to text console.
I managed to take a picture with my camera and copied the text on the screen below.
The original partition and system (9.04) stays intact and runs normally after the install attempt.

Hmm....it might be that the new grub is not compatible but honestly I'm not sure.
