No partition manager

Asked by RichardH

Hi,
I'm totally new to Ubuntu and Linux. I have a spare computer with a clean 80Gb HDD. When I installed Ubuntu 9.04 I allocated the entire 80Gb so that I had room to play. It all installed OK and works a treat. BUT! When it tries ti update I get the message "Not enough space, please release more space". Claened all "junk" but still message requiring more space.
Read Forum which advises using Partition Editor ( System - Admin - Partition Manager) to change partition size.

PROBLEM - NO Partition Manager in "SYSTEM - ADMINISTRATION" or anywhere else that I can find????

What have I done wrong??

You haven't done anything wrong. Just have to install gparted (it is an optional app and it's not installed by default)....
Open a Terminal (Applications - Accesories - Terminal) and copy and paste next line:

sudo aptitude install gparted

Then Enter and type your admin password... Thats all.
Once installed you will find it in System - Admin - Partition Manager

Hi :)

It doesn't sound very normal for Ubuntu to run out of space unexpectedly on a partition over 15Gb. Can you move a movie or something onto an external drive to allow you to complete the updates and then perhaps move it back?

When you are booting up the machine do you get a menu with a lot of different options for booting into Ubuntu or just 1 option and just 1 for Windows too?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
