Partitioning

Asked by Rob Frerejean

I made a small mistake at my last installation.

I always have my /home on a seperate partition. But now I forgot to do that. How can I shrink my large / to a smaller size to create a /home partition from the space that came free?

Or do I need to reinstall everything?

You can resize your hard disk partitions by using the Ubuntu standard desktop install cd.
I mean you must boot your pc entirely from Ubuntu Live install desktop cd and you can use gparted, call it from the menu: System → Administration → Partition Editor

Hope this helps

Hmmm, that´s my problem. For some reason my system will not start from CD. I mean it starts from CD, but I can not start Ubuntu 9.04.

I did install 8.04 first and upgraded from there to 9.04.

As we speak I am backing up everything now and prepare for the worst.

I know I can´t change the partition now, because it´s in use.

To upgrade your system from 8.04 you need to upgrade it to 8.10 then to 9.04.
But consider to install the 9.04 directly.

You can also use the Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 live desktop install cd to resize your partitions if the Ubuntu 9.04 install cd doesn't start.

Hope this helps
