where do I find a partition manager / resizer for use in fixing insufficient size partition chosen by automatic mode on installation of UBUNTU 9.10

Asked by bob

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

New installation of UBUNTU 9.10 found a few problems: 1 - partitioning: only the manual resizer works properly, otherwise you get error messages such as "insufficient drive space" for updates. 2 - Wireless USB dongle (Netgear WG111.v3) only operates ONCE after booting, never again, although dongle works fine on WIN-XP other boot drive on same disc.

when you insert the disk and choose to install it shortly after it gives you a choice of how much of your hard drive to partition if you delete the current portion and then proceed installing your os you should b ok

Hi bob,

It sounds like you have a couple of different issues here, one dealing with partitioning and one dealing with a wireless dongle. If you split your report into two different Questions that will make it a lot easier for us to answer them.

You mention that you're using Ubuntu 9.10, however the release page (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicReleaseSchedule) seems to indicate that there's not even an Alpha release out yet. Are you sure you're using 9.10?

One way to determine the version of Ubuntu you're running is to open a terminal and run the following command:
  lsb_release -a

Please check the version of Ubuntu in a terminal and post the information into this Question report.

Sincerely,
- qubit

Hi, You are correct, the new version is 9.04. I neeed to get a small partition utility that can resize the partition that was incorrectly applied during install using the "Automatic" choice in partitioning. (The next install on another computer was using "manual" - which worked fine. Any attempt to add a large program or update (1st) is met with "insufficient space warning" as the partition was too small.
I have listed the wireless problems on Launchpad in it's own area. (but it has been an ongoing problem all through the series of Ubuntu (7, 8, and now this one). Bob Koomans, Brisbane, Australia.

It might be worth asking a new question about the wireless issue

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

For Partition Editors
In Kubuntu the best one seems to be QtPartEd but in Xubuntu or Ubuntu it seems to be the regular GPartEd that is often already included anyway, try

System - Administration - Partition Editor

if that choice isn't listed then try further down the list , use Synaptic Package Manager to install it. *buntu really needs about 15Gb and plenty of that as free space but i'm managing quite well with only 10Gb, although i do store my normal user data on a second drive.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi Tom, thanks... must make a note of this! I ended up re-installing Ubuntu by deleting the drive it was on with the UBUNTU disk, which solved the space problem caused by "Automatic" partitioning, using "Manual" instead. This was before your note to me. I still cant get the WIRELESS to work in UBUNTU, so have to reboot into WinXP to get on the Inet. This means I canoot update my new UBUNTU installation. Perhaps new install updates can be accessed as a FILE to be copied and "executed or installed" when copied to UBUNTU?

Hi, got info from Bob - use GpartED. But had already re-installed UBUNTU again, by using manual partition manager and deleted drive before re-installing, and manuallly chose space I needed (70Gig)... Thanks!, Bob Koomans.
PS, now I have to find out how to get Wireless working.. all my other attempts fail. to download anything, have to reboot to WinXP, and use wless from there (Netgear WG111v3 dongle)

It sounds like you have 2 separate questions

1. Wireless
2. How to update/install stuff without an internet connection in Ubuntu

I don't know the answer to either of these so please post them as separate questions
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask bob for more information if necessary.
