To resize your partitions, the partitions must not be in use (mounted by the system).

You can use the Ubuntu live install cd to boot your pc entirely from cdrom, so your hard disk partitions will not be mounted by the system.

Then you can resize them by accessing to the live Ubuntu menu System→Administration→Partition Editor (gparted package) and using the gparted options you can surely do it.

Is always useful to backup your relevant data.

Hope this helps

Creating a separate partition to move your "/home" directory onto is a very good idea. Also creating another partition to install a different linux on as part of a multi-boot system is another excellent idea but you probably soon find that Ubuntu is the best - i did :) Anyway, it's fun to try out different linux's especially because they can all read data on each others partitions. It's also a great way to learn a lot about linux's very fast and ultimately that helps you in Ubuntu too, obviously ;) 20Gb might be far more than you'll need in this case though, but if its free space anyway it wont hurt :)

Bhavani's link is excellent - just ignore all that stuff about Windows and folllow the rest of it. Basically all you need do is go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Adminitration - Partition Editor

We're here with further help and would appreciate more information to help you further. Uwe's question is particularly relevant.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
