new partition mounts but I can't save or paste into it.

Asked by wildbill

I used GPartEd to add a new partition to my hard drive. The partition will mount and unmount but I can't save or paste anything into it. I am a new user and don't know much about Ubuntu commands. The partition reads "79GB Media" when mounted on the desktop. Thanks for your help.

Please go up to the top taskbar and click on

Places - 79 GB Media

Does this open up a file-browser window? Can you drag files into it? Sorry i'm just checking something first, thanks.

Regards from
Tom :)

Do you have the rights to access this partition? Did you try opening the file-browser with root rights? gksudo nautilus in the terminal would do this.

Thanks, now I can paste into this partition. Can I fix it so it will allow me to use it automatically after bootup or do I have to open it in root rights everytime I want to use this partition. Thanks for your help. wildbill

Go to System->Administration -> Users and groups. click on your name, and then properties. make sure the "Access external drives automatically" checkbox is checked (after unlocking of course with your sudo password). Other then that, if you had it mount every time onto your computer automatically, you could put it in your fstab and give yourself the rights

This got me part way there. I'm trying to set up a partition for dat in Ububtu 8.10, that will be there automatically when I install 9.10 which I have on disk. I have defined a partition (real not logical - I want it there always) of 21 GB using GParted from the 9.10 disk. I've formatted it as ext3. Like WildBill I can now move files into it, but not 'save as' into it. Right-clicking on it says its owned by root, and I can't give myself any permissions, nor change the owner.
Since I created it, why don't I own it? I've tried 'sudo chmod' but I'm not sure what its name is to the command line, and it doesn't seem to change anything. How do I give myself ownership, and me (and me only) permissions to read and write?

Hi Dave Allen :)

Launchpad does not have a good way of re-visiting old questions, especially ones marked as "Solved" already. The "Solved Answers Database" is good for looking up ideas in but to develop those ideas please re-post your question as a new question

So that the new people answering questions can see your question.

To help them and to keep your question short you might copy&paste this link to this question so they can see what has been tried already
