Formatting new (RAW) hard drives

Asked by Teza

Hey, i was able to get a friend at work to use ubuntu on a formatting computer. it;s purpose it to format new external hard drives to a NTFS or FAT32 format, depending on request. ( i work for a computer company. we assemble external hdd's form time to time.) but when i plugged in the new HDD it couldn't mount it because its a RAW (new) hard drive. I need something that i can use to format these hdd's or they will switch back to windows.

formatting/partitioning hard-drives does not need them to be mounted, indeed its impossible to do it to a mounted hard-drive. just follow the normal partitioning advice using the partition editor (system -> administration -> partition editor)

You can partition and format drives by installing an application called 'gparted'. After install do 'System -> Administration -> Partition editor' on the menus to start the application.

For some visual assistance, see: http://www.fsckin.com/2007/10/21/partitioning-or-resizing-drives-in-ubuntu-using-gparted/
