Changing Partitions / File Systems

Asked by Thomas Brownlie

I installed Unbutu 8.04 on my laptop.
I created a 18g partition for Unbuntu + a 2gb swap space.
I left a 40gb partition that had an existing Windows partition on it (with various files on it).

I know what to scrap the 40gb partition, and give all of the space to ubuntu.

I could just re-install unbuntu from scratch and select the option "use entire" - but this seems to be an extreme measure.

How do I / is this the correct thing to do:

* Go into the partition editor
* Deleted the Windows Partition.
* Give that space to the unbuntu partition (or "extend" the unbuntu partition)

Suggestions?

Reinstalling would definately be extreme.

If the 40gb window partition is adjacent to the ubuntu partition you can used gparted to extend it ubuntu to include the free space left after deleting windows. You will have to do this from the LIveCD since you cannot use gparted on mounted partitions.

Another option would simply make it a data partition and move /home there. Either way you should easily be able to recovery the space without a drastic reinstall.

Can you help with this problem?
