decreasing ubuntu partition?

Asked by Jonas Jabs

Hi
i have a dual boot with two partitions. one ubuntu the other windows xp. i want to resize the partitions so the result should be a smaller ubuntu partition and a bigger windows partition. which is the easiest way to do this?
and please i would prefer a solution with GUI :)

when you install ubuntu a partition program is integrated into the installation routine. can i use it without performing a new install? so that i just resize the partitions and then stop the install process?

any useful help is very appreciated
THANK YOU

sudo apt-get install gparted

It should appear in the following menu
System > Administration > Partition Editor

If you can´t find it, start it by gksu gparted

Also it probably good idea to review some documentation
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm

when i unmount the ntfs volume in gparted its says:

the content of the filesystem cant be read. This is why some operations could not be performable.

so i can unmount but i cant resize:(
i can only convert and manage flags but i cant resize

is there a solution? or do you know another way?

Gparted must works on unmounted partitions

So please boot from Ubuntu 8.04.1 live install cd

Perform resize using the menu item "Partition Editor"

you will find "Partition Editor" item under menu System->Administration menu of Ubuntu desktop Live install cd.

The resize of partitions might take hours...

Hope this helps

Hello, if you get a message that says the Windows partition cannot be resized or mounted, you have to turn off(not restart) your system by Windows correctly, then turn on your system again and boot from the livecd of ubuntu. Find the Partition Editor and then resize the partition you want to.

Hello,

I have ubuntu installed on my 250 GB external hard drive.

About 75 GB is in Fat 32 hence windows compatible, the rest is in ubuntu format...

I left too much space for ubuntu and would like to decrease it and change that space in windows compatible Fat 32 or NTFS.

I tried from ubuntu installation cd. I thought of making the linux partition smaller first to 10GB as soon as I click on apply it comes with error message and does not do anything further. Under details it just shows the action and the fact that it was stopped.

Am I doing something wrong?
is there another free software I can use?

any help would be much appreciated

H
