format an external DR

My external dr is in ntsf ext. How can I format this DR to br used in ubuntu 8.10

Normally, if you are using a recent version of Ubuntu, you shouldn't need to do anything and it should simply work when you plug it in.

Now, what you could do is format the drive to a native Linux file system format if you don't need the drive to work on Windows anymore. A simple solution would be to use GParted.
