If your data is 'important' you SHOULD make a backup....

Are both on /dev/sda1 ?

Why don´t you transfer your files to partition you will not format? If space is problem you can resize partitions and make bigger one you will save and one you want to delete make smaller. You can do this with gparted program.

Sure, clonezilla can do partition images. You will need a storage of suitable size to hold the resulting image but sure why not :-)
/dev/sda isn't a partition, its the physical drive. /dev/sda1 is the first partition on the drive and /dev/sda2 would be the second.
