how to increase size of ubuntu partition

To update latest ubuntu version i have to increase partition size of the drive kindly tell how to do it

lsb_release -a; uname -a; echo; dpkg -l | grep linux-image-2; echo; df -h

Boot on Ubuntu CD/USB stick. Choose "Try" instead of "Install", then System->Administration->Gparted partition editor. You need to click on green arrow to launch run of recorded commands.
Could you explain exactly why you need to resize your partitions.
