cannot extend ubuntu partition over unallocated space

Asked by Mhpeake

I have windows 7 installed as primary, and ubuntu 10.10 as logical, I am trying to convert to linux, so i am slowly copying over data as i learn how to use linux. but now i dont have enough room on the ubuntu filesystem, and too much on the primary partition. So i got GParted partitioner and resized the primary partition, but it wont allow me to resize the ubuntu filesystem partition. i noticed that the partition ubuntu is on has a icon of keys beside it, so im assuming that means its locked, but i really dont know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Yes, the partition of Ubuntu is locked, as it's in used... You cannot resize a partition currently in used.

If you have a LiveCD or liveUSB, boot on it, then start Gparted, the partitions will not be locked. Except the swap, so right click on the swap, deactivate it, then you can resize/move all the partitions on your hard drive.

WARNING: don't go haphazardly resizing your windize partition. you can overwrite parts of files without realizing and render your system and/or program inoperable, as well as trash files that you have saved on your hard drive.

defragment the hard drive first. afterwards, look at the mapping to see how many files are scattered on the bottom portion of the map. you may need to compress the data to move the files up before you can decrease your windoze partition.
