Persistent issue installing 64 bit 10.04 on new computer.

Asked by Justin Operable

I have seen other posts on forums and on launchpad of people having this problem but none of the proposed workarounds have helped me. I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 - 64 bit on a new machine that has windows 7 preloaded onto it. The machine has an intel i7 processor, 8 gbs of ram, a high end graphics card and 1 tb of hard disk space in a two hard drive raid array to the best of my knowledge. I am a long time Ubuntu user and have never had these problems.

Namely when I try to install Ubuntu I get to the Partitioning section and the screen is blank showing no devices, no filesystems, no options and when I try to click forward it spits out an error telling me "No Filesystem is Defined".

Gparted shows no devces or filesystems whatsoever even when I refresh devices. There's simply nothing there at all. I tried using an old 8.10 32 bit disc to see if the problem persisted and it did. I tried workarounds involving selecting no dmraid and noacpi at startup, and uninstalling dmraid packages from synaptic with a live session running. None of it has affected the problem whatsoever. I have checked both discs I tried for Defects and neither had any errors.

I really need help with this. I don't want to keep Windows, so a solution that eliminates it is fine by me. I just need Linux running on this machine asap. I am a digital artist, and I only want to use Linux, preferably Ubuntu, I don't want to have to use Windows because of a stupid bug. Please help, I can only wait so long as my livelihood depends on me having access to gimp and blender which frankly don't run that well in Windows. Sorry to be wordy but I really need help with this, no possible solutions have worked for me, this problem seems to have persisted for a long time and I need to get this machine up and running asap so I can start making art for open source games and for my portfolio.

I'm afraid problem is on RAID management. You could also have later difficulties with Grub.
Can you provide data about your RAID 0 (motherboard or software) ?

My motherboard is an Asus Sabertooth X58 and I assume the raid is set up via the motherboard as the os currently seems to just be a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro. A quick glance through the user guide of the motherboard shows that there is a section on raid configurations and setting the raid item in bios. I don't know if that information helps. I really need Linux, I can't stand using Windows especially for my art and day to day uses. Is there anyway I can unset the raid item in the BIOS so that it ceases to function until after Ubuntu is installed? Do I have to manually turn off the raid controller in the hardware? (sorry if this sounds ignorant, I'm not a huge huge techie or hardware guy, just an avid user and digital artist).

Also if it is the RAID management, would that cause gparted not to show partitions, and the problem to persist even after I have uninstalled dmraid packages in a live session as worked for others?

I'm sorry but I don't work on computer with RAID, so I'm not competent in this area. I simply know that people who have PC with RAID have sometimes difficulties with Grub (multi-boot) and Gparted, even if situation improves, as there are a lot of companies with RAID PCs.
So you can:
else request help of people who have RAID configuration
else remove RAID in BIOS to get my help (and by an external 1TB disk for backup)
As you are lucky (it's raining today), I will do some "Google".

Even if you use Ubuntu, you could request help on RedHat/Fedora forum. These people are more used to RAID configuration, and all Linux distribution use same root tools.

Ok so I did some checking and in my BIOS setup it says my drive configuration is IDE not RAID. I found this out while trying to turn off RAID at setup. I think the guy who put my computer together just put in a tb hd, because only one drive shows up in windows and no raid seems to be setup in my bios from what I can tell... am I overlooking something?

I read again your messages. Can you confirm:
   - RAID is OFF
   - both disks are PATA (or both are SATA)
   - Gparted see any device, even empty

As best I can tell there are no RAID volumes, and I only have one hard disk that is 1tb. Originally, it had been planned to have two disks in a raid volume but in the end I guess he just made it with one hard disk. The disk is SATA. When I open gparted in a live session there is nothing there. It doesn't show any filesystems. And as I mentioned before, when I try to install I get the error No Root File System is Defined with no options and no way to continue installation.

I have no idea.
Could you try with Gparted on LiveCD Ubuntu 32 bits ?
Can you confirm that today Windows see the disk ?

Yea I have, gparted still can't see anything even with a 32 bit disk, and Windows sees a hard disk c drive under my computer that is 932 gbs.

I see only one solution. Convert this question as a bug.

If you have GParted 0.5.1 or higher, you can double click on the "unallocated" disk to see more information on why no partition table is displayed.

Alternatively, you can use the command "parted /path-to-your-disk-device unit s print" to see the same message.

You might also try GParted Live:

You can change the procedure like when I tried t install 64 bit it felt like the same issue in the https://myluxuryscent.com/ I opened it in the device were it already installed it will help the PC to remove errors.

Can you help with this problem?
