Ubuntu does not recognize my Hard Drive error creating file system

When trying to partition my hard drive Ubuntu came up with an error creating file system "error creating file system: helper exited with code 1: helper failed with: mke2fs 1.41.9" and when i tried to create a partition tale again "error creating partition table: helper exited with code 1; in part_create_partition_table: device_file=/dev/sda, scheme=0 ped_device_get()failed"

Can you boot on Ubuntu CD with option "Try".
Then Administration->System->GParted and check if GParted is able to manage problem.
