Change NTFS To ext4 system

Asked by Chethan S.

I have a 60 GB partition in my hard drive in NTFS format. I want to change it to ext4. Therefore I used Disk Utility's Edit Partition option and set my requirement as Linux(0x83). Now the "partition type" shows Linux(0x83) but "type" is still NTFS.

I also don't want my data to get wiped away.

Then you should have a BACKUP. Once your backups are decent. You can format the partition to ext4 and then copy the data back using Linux. The data will then be on an ext4 partition. You cannot convert NTFS to ANY other filesystem without using this method

Please use the gparted tool by booting your pc entirely from an Ubuntu 10.04 live install cd to format and to manage your partitions.
