where to go to reformat an external drive through USB.

Asked by VLatus

Hi all :}
Can anyone please tell me, where in any of the menus
I can find out how to get an external drive to be recognized
by the OS (Ubuntu) and maybe reformat it as well ?

Thank you very much in advance,

Prior answer to format your usb device

To check if your external usb devices is recognized please using terminal from Application → Accessories → Terminal and type

lsusb

(with and without your external device plugged to usb) and check the differences from listed rows to discover if your device is recognized.

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

I did install the gparted package - that went well. When I did that, the new menus did show up.
And I was able to see the differences of the listed rows in the main drive, but not that of the USB drive.

I did disconnect the USB drive and rebooted - both with the USB drive connected and not connected.

I do know the drive is still good because it was tested on a friends (Windows Vista) PC.

I do not care what is on it, I would just like to reformat it so a Linux (UBUNTU) machine can recognize it.

Mil grazie per l'aiuto, Paizan. :}

Hi,

If you're using Ubuntu = or > 9.10 you can try the Disk utility under System > Administration.

If your USB drive is recognized, it will show up and you can do mounting/unmounting, formatting etc.

Hope that helps.

Hi Vu,

Oh yes, I did try your suggestion. That was the last thing I tried, just before I posted my question.
But thank you for also helping me out.

Take care,
