apps not starting in ubuntu 11.04

Asked by harlie dills

I have used google earth for several months but suddenly when I try to launch the app it shows briefly on the screen but when it pops up in the left border it nearly instantly disappears and does not start. what can I do to get it to launch?

thanks for any help also note I am not a very experienced user (kinda dumb so I need very precise instructions)

regarding the above I since noticed the version I have now active is 11.10 and not 11.04 as I stated
still can not run google earth and the instructions I found in a manual on ubuntu do not work so I still dont know how to run from terminal
the instruction I am trying to use is as follows: dpkg --get-selections > my_software.txt
this is supposed to show a list of apps then you can find the full name to use in the command
whereis Google Earth
then you could attempt to run it in the terminal but none of this works

after the last post to you I discovered that other apps also will not start they are ones I added such as google earth and stellarium
so then I did a search on the net and discovered that every one who run 11.10 have the same problem so it is a bug in 11.10 evidently. maybe some day they will solve it. meanwhile I can revert to MS Windows for google earth. is it possible without a lot of trouble to go back to ubuntu 10.10

thanks, harlie
