GoogleEarth is available in the repository, you could try the command below on your Terminal:

sudo apt-get install googleearth

Hi Ian.

I tried the script in the terminal and the reply was that it can't find the package. Another suggestion?

Go here: http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html

download the GoogleEarthLinux.bin file
Then open your console and go where you've downloaded this file and type: sh GoogleEarthLinux.bin

... then you'll see there is a problem in the Linuxinstaller and I think it'll the same with the File from the repository.

Terminal:

XY$ sh GoogleEarthLinux.bin
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing Google Earth for GNU/Linux 5.2.1.1588..............................................................
setup.data/setup.xml:1: parser error : Document is empty

setup.data/setup.xml:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found

... there is a problem with den setup.data/setup.xml

... you can try to inform google about that or wait patiently for a fix.
