sda2 appears on desktop

Asked by apeck

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS

I have a smallish sda1 for Ubuntu and a larger (~87GB) as sda2 for my documents, downloads, etc.

With 7.10, I mounted via /etc/fstab sda2 at ~/Documents so I could use defaults for document storage in the various apps.

With 8.04LTS, the mount from /etc/fstab still seems to be working, but I also get an icon on my desktop "87.3GB Media" that appears to be mounted at ~/Documents as well. It bugs me so I'd like to remove the icon but keep the partition mounted.

1- Right click your Gnome Menu and select Edit Menus
2- Select System Tools and click the box beside Configuration Editor
3- Open Configuration Editor from the Gnome Menu under System Tools
4- In the Configuration Editor do as follows
     a- apps
     b- nautilus
     c- desktop
d- uncheck the box beside volumes_visible
5- Close the Configuration Editor and you'll no longer see that volume on the desktop, but can still access mounted volumes from the Places Menu

Regards-
DS

Oh, not sure if the Configuration Editor is installed by default or not. I would think it is, if not do:
sudo aptitude install gconf-editor

One side effect of this solution is that USB storage devices won't
show up either. At least I think not. Haven't really tried it yet.

You are correct, removable drives will have to be accessed form the Places Menu as well.
Not as annoying as the alternative, though. I can't stand seeing volumes on my desktop, either.
