installing ATI driver

I am a Newbie when it comes to Unbuntu or Linux for that matter..I have tried to install a ATI driver for my video card and I still can't get it off the 640x480...I tried useing ENVY,but still nothing.Can I edit the X11 log orsomething..Need some suggestions...
