synaptic program installer ceased to function

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I am a newbe to ubuntu 7.10......following error report appeared after failure of activating synaptic program installer....unfamiliar on how to run dpkg to correct the problem

dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

Open a terminal, Applications>Accessories>Terminal and enter the command:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
