Personal file sharing - Gnome(?)

Asked by Larry Griffin on 2016-12-07

I would like to transfer files between my computers and I don't really care how it gets done WIFI, Bluetooth, or cable. There is already a question posted on 2010-05-13 #110852 and answered, sorry SSH and SAMBA are not the answer. I'm a novis user when it comes to Ubuntu 16.04LTS or any other version, and I don't need to try and configure files to get file sharing to work such as SHH and Samba. I've tried. There is a bug #536766 with another 1/2 dozen duplicates. One of the responders, declaring that they were a techie was able to find the files and get file sharing to work. Unfortunately what files and where are not mentioned.

There is a 3 bar menu on my task bar when I click on it, then go to 'other', there are 2 choices, Checkbox, file sharing. Click file sharing and the files have not been installed this appears to have been the cause for #536766. What is the relevance of Checkbox to file sharing assuming that there was suppose to be.

I also found that there was a package for file sharing with bluetooth Webdav. When I used apt-get to try and install it I got an error files not found.

Isn't it about time this got fixed or a work around publish. If the responder in #536766 is correct the files exist.

Once you have installed openssh-server you can connect to SSHFS or SFTP using Nautilus in Linux or various tools in Windows including (but not limited to) Filezilla

You can even mount SSHFS using the mount command and it will appear as a local folder on the client system

Why not remove file sharing from the menu?
How about a manpage for gnome user share it might tell me how to get it to work?
Why install SSH or samba when there is suppose to be program that works.

btw I've tried to both with no luck.

Can you help with this problem?
