changing screen resolution in terminal

screen resolution is so large I cannot get System options 'drop down' menu,
I can open terminal, but need command line information to change screen resolution, (in order to see-use desktop features)

From your terminal, issue the command:

xrandr -s <x_resolution>*<y_resolution>

For better understanding on how xrandr works, try man xrandr from your terminal.
