Hi Pamila, try with this:
try with add yourself at tty group and re-login.

System->Administration->Users and Groups
unlock with administrator account, push "Manage Groups" select tty group and push "Properties", and then check your account.
Relogin and retry.

I hope that this work for you.

Regards

I am successful until I get to the "tty" part. Where is that? Thank you

When you are push "Manage Groups" in the opening window named "Groups setting" you are seeing the list of all groups.
One of these is named "tty".
Double click on it and then in Group Members tick your user . In this manner you ave added your user to the group tty.

I don't seem to have a tty group. All the other directions work, but under manage groups there isn't anything called "tty". Do I need to add the group "tty"? Thanks

I am still unable to find "tty" under manage groups. Can someone please help? I've not been able to run back up for several days. Thanks so much.

Hi Pamila sorry for the delay answer, but I was busying.
It is strange the fact that you don't have tty groups. You can try to create one but I'm not sure that it works. But if you want trying in "Manage Groups" add new group with name "tty" and ID 5.
I have a question, does back-up have never worked before?
And if you have possibility, can you try it with a live-cd or live-usb?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Pamila for more information if necessary.
