where to set environ variables

Hi All...

I have installed tomcat5.5 using aptitude.
I am using java1.6 for application programming...
and maven2 to build a project

But.. I need to set JAVA_HOME, JRE_HOME, CATALINA_HOME variables ...how can i set these
variables to make my application running
