I have had this issue with the last few Ubuntu installs. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy card. I installed an ALSA mixer so that I could check "Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack" (which was unchecked). As soon as I would do this, I'd have sound. Hope that helps.

i am not sure if this is related but i have lost my duel boot for xp on this machine too. it was working fine before the upgrade but now the boot option is gone. i can still see all of my windows files and the recovery files too but the boot kernel seems to be missing.

Hi,
Please try this procedure:
1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
2. and add these lines to the end of the file:
# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=m2-2
3. Then navigate to System>
4. reboot and retest sound
5. If sound still does not work, then replace m2-2 with one of the following model options:
STAC9202/9250/9251
ref Reference board, base config
m2-2 Some Gateway MX series laptops
m6 Some Gateway NX series laptops
pa6 Gateway NX860 series
6. You will have to reboot and retest sound after every model option change to the alsa-base.conf file
7. Please test sound on both the speakers and the headphones on all audio jacks on the pc.
8. Make sure to increase volume on all channels to around 77%
Regards,
Mark

The f is missing at the end of the filename /etc/modprobe.
The correct command is:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
Please copy-paste instead of typing it manually.

things seem to have gone from bad to worse. I followed the step you suggested but it seems that now i can not even open alsa mixer. i get and error that says 'alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory'. i was able to access it this morning but now i can't. should i try going back to square one and do a fresh install?

I think you are experiencing this issue:
https:/
You need to find a way to disable the 56k modem, maybe by using the Jockey Hardware Drivers manager and deactivating the modem there. Then reboot and retest sound after disabling the 56k modem.
Hope it helps.

that did the trick... i disabled the modem by going to sys->admin-
