Is there an irc application suitable to run in Ubuntu?

Asked by pedrotheswift

I have tried, unsuccessfully to run, Java runtime emvironment in Ubuntu 7.04, could you tell me if there is a compatible irc program by which I can run chat programs, such as Talk City?
I'm a complete newbie in Linux trying to evaluate several distros and I have a number of requirements, one of which is the ability to chat online. I have until this point been unsuccessful in this regard. My Computer is P4 winfast/K7s741 board, 2.6 gig Athlon cpu,1gb-ddr 400 ram, 120 gig hdd, on board sound and video, Ethernet adsl Modem, all working well.

As for an irc program, as I said in question 8066, xchat is a good program. I'm not familiar with Talk City but if you just want an irc program to connect and talk on line then check out xchat.

sudo apt-get install xchat.

Can you help with this problem?
