how to update code for mplayer

I used ubuntu 7.04
but the mplayer is suck and I can not watch my movie
more over, I often watching online movie and it said that I can not play it
most of my movie is .wmv and .avi
So how can I update my codecs for mplayer by using terminal
I just using linux for 2 weeks and I am a noob >_<

The first thing to do is to make sure you have the repositories all enabled, you can find an easy walkthrough right here:

Then this guide is available to install the proper codecs for multimedia:

There's also a few other options for media players. VLC Commonly works well.

I think VLC is self contained and doesn't need any codecs.
