I create multiple profiles for my Gnome terminal, but they don't seem to stick. I even tried only changing the default one. Where would they be saved, and why aren't they saving properly?

Asked by Heather "Starshine" Stern

I am on a newly installed Jaunty (4.09). It currently being May 2009 this is as new as it gets.

I have read numerous pages about using the profiles once you have them. I like profiles. I enjoy having three or four or even five, so the multiple terminal windows around my screen can be colorized according to purposes I have for them. IN previous versions of Ubuntu I had them, but this being a completely fresh install, I figured I'd make the profiles fresh, since it's not exactly difficult to pick a background and some colors.

However, my beautiful choices of fonts, colors, etc, are not being saved on a permanent basis. They *seem* to be being saved on a temporary basis, but I cannot tell if they are merely being cached by Gnome somehow, or what. Bash options about references profiles are good - but only help if the profile exists.

I only know that when I wrap up for the day, head out to coffee or whatever, when I log back in, my Terminal is back to being white as a bone. More white than a bone, actually - ivory would be prettier.

If it can only store it temporarily, I'd like to know what I can tarball up, or create a script for, to protect it, and to carry my profiles with me to other Gnome systems.

If it can store it permanently, I'd like to know where it's supposed to, so I can try to figure out why it's not doing so. Clearly it's being buggy for me right now.

Hello, Heather "Starshine" Stern. :-)

Are your profiles still available, but in the incorrect color arrangement, or is only the default profile available after logout?

Only the default profile exists when I return and login, as if Terminal were
freshly installed.

Okay, this time, don't create any new profiles, and then change the colors of the default (and only) one. Restart your machine. See if the colors are still there.

If these colors are still there, try creating profiles one at a time, and changing the colors, and rebooting. If it works with the first one, which I wager it should, it will be a bit tedious, but should fix you right up.

I hope I've helped. :-) Keep me posted.

Best to you, and good luck.

The colors do not stick on Default either. The machine has been rebooted a
handful of times now.

I asked the my other user if he's seeing it too, but he uses xterm and
forces it to the colors he wants from the command line, so he never noticed.

Just thought of something, Heather.

When editing profiles with Edit --> Profile Preferences --> Color Tab, after setting up your colors, the option "Use System Colors" is unchecked, right?

Yes, in fact, that's about the only thing I'm actually doing is turning off
that boxes and choosing colors of my own for text and background.

I even tried changing only the text color. No joy. It lasts for the
current session, and isn't kept.

Hmm... Have you thought about downloading the Gnome terminal, removing the current one, and installing the new one? It seems a fairly simple process, and I can't think of anything else for you to try (other than xterm)...

I'm so sorry that I haven't been able to be of greater help.

I hope this helps though, and solves your problem.

Still keep me posted, and I will post any other ideas I have.

Best to you, and good luck. :-)

Can you help with this problem?
